Sub-millimetre wave range-Doppler radar as a diagnostic tool for gas-solids systems -- solids concentration measurements

Current non-intrusive measurement techniques for characterising the solids flow in gas-solids suspensions are limited by low temporal or spatial resolution of sample volume, case optical methods, a short range sight. In this work, sub-millimetre wave range-Doppler radar is developed and validated sensing concentrations particle system with known characteristics. The combines favourable features, such as ability to see through at frequencies opaque materials, measure local velocity reflected power few cubic centimetres over distances metres. This paper introduces method relate received signal volumetric (cv) different particulate materials. experimental set-up provides steady stream free-falling that consist glass spheres, bronze spheres natural sand grains size distributions diameters 50-300 $\mu$m. Thus, values cv found using measurements retrieved from closure mass balance derived measured rate velocity. results show reliable cv, mean relative error approximately 25% all tested sizes rates, yielding ranging 0.2x10$^{-4}$ m$^{3}$/ m$^{3}$ up 40x10$^{-4}$ velocities within 0-4.5 m/s. demonstrates technology diagnose unique combination penetration length, accuracy, resolution.
